Materials can and should be associated with one or more classes. To do this, select the classes for which the material will be used from the "Classes" field when editing the material.

Associating a material with a class will cause the material to show up in the list of "Materials" when adding an assignment on the calendar for a class. If a material is not associated with the class for which the assignment is being created, the material will not be shown in the list.
